Most hardwoods in our area prune best in late winter, before bud break. Oaks should be pruned in deep winter — never April through July — because of oak wilt risk. Flowering trees get pruned right after they bloom. Pines and other conifers get light shaping in late spring. We'll match the timing to the species so the tree actually benefits from the work.
